Description
Orthoceras Nautiloid Cephalopod
Orthoceres was a squid like creature which has left behind beautifully structured imprints in stone.
Orthoceras is a cephalopod that first appeared approximately 500 millions years ago, and then became extinct approximately 385 million years ago. The name means “straight horn”, referring to its characteristic long, straight, conical shell. The preserved shell is all that remains of this ancestor of our modern-day squid.
A great addition to any collection, plus it looks excellent in the classroom. A unique and interesting office decoration or paperweight for the fan of geology and fossils. Have students pass it around and study its markings, and maybe draw what they imagine the creature might look like.
Age: Upper Devonian period (around 370 million years ago)
Found: Atlas region, Morocco
Approx Size: 50mm – 70mm
