Part of a Tusk from an adult Woolly Mammoth.
About 40,000 years old
Approx size: 12cm x 8cm

This peice of Mammoth tusk was snatched from a conveyor belt during the mechanical process of gravel excavation in the Thames valley. Such finds are very rare.
The tusks of the mammoth, unlike the tusks of elephants, had a distinctive corkscrew twist. Tusks were used in fighting and feeding.
